What Are the Serious Side Effects from Yasmin?

Yaz Lawsuit Victim

Women have recently been reporting that they have experienced serious side effects when taking Yasmin. These include heart attacks, strokes, gallbladder disease, blood clots and pancreatitis. Others have reported pulmonary embolisms and venous thrombosis. Yasmin is known as a ‘fourth generation’ form of birth control pill. It contains drospirenone, a form of progestin, that has an effect on the way the body moderates the levels of salt it needs for vital functions.

Our bodies need potassium in order to allow our muscles to contract, and to aid other vital bodily functions. However, if our bodies have too much potassium in them this can cause a very dangerous, sometimes life-threatening condition called ‘hyperkalemia.’ This can cause the heart to beat erratically, leading to stroke, heart attacks and life-threatening blood clots.

Some women are particularly vulnerable to hyperkalemia and under no circumstances should be prescribed Yasmin. These include women who have a history of stroke or blood clots; a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills; circulation problems, particularly when caused by diabetes; breast cancer; cancer of the uterus; kidney or liver disease; a heart valve disorder; severe high blood pressure; an adrenal gland disorder; abnormal vaginal bleeding or migraine headaches.

Women who develop these types of conditions tend to experience one or more of the following symptoms: pain and swelling of the skin on a localized area, abdominal pain, feelings of hopelessness and despair, breathing difficulties, problems with their vision, bodily numbness on one side only, faintness, confusion, disorientation and lightheadedness. Women experiencing serious Yasmin side effects should seek urgent medical assistance immediately. Not only can this prevent further health problems from occurring, but it could also save lives.

Similarly, women who take other medication that has the effect of raising potassium levels in the blood should also not take Yasmin. Women who are taking Heparin, NSAIDS such as Advil and Motrin, and ACE inhibitors such as Vasotec, Capoten and Zestril (for hypertension and heart problems) are at increased risk of serious side effects.

Unfortunately, some women have been prescribed Yasmin even when they presented with one or more of the risk factors. Others have taken the birth control ignorant of the fact that they were in the high-risk category. Between 2004-2008 there were fifty reports to the FDA of Yasmin-related deaths. However, this is unlikely to be the total amount of deaths caused by this drug as some Yasmin-taking women could have died without their medical practitioners making the connection between their birth control pills and their deaths.
